Our Mission
The Bibliothèque Communale de Saint Sorlin en Valloire operates under French Association Loi 1901 as a declared public-benefit civic institution committed to democratizing access to written culture, early learning resources, and intergenerational recreational media across the Drôme des Collines region. Our statutory mission serves the general public interest by cultivating an inclusive, welcoming community hub in the heart of Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire where children, students, working families, and senior citizens access literature, cognitive games, and digital literacy resources free of commercial barriers. Guided by the values of republican equality, operational transparency, and educational solidarity, the association fulfills its civic duty through rigorous volunteer stewardship, transparent public accounting, and close collaboration with local municipal authorities and regional library networks. Our Intergenerational Reading and Storytelling Circles bring village seniors, schoolchildren, and toddlers together twice weekly inside our warm communal reading room. Volunteer narrators read classic folk tales, contemporary children's literature, and local historical archives, nurturing an enduring passion for written culture while creating strong emotional bonds between rural generations. Children discover the joys of imaginative storytelling, while older participants find companionship and renewed civic purpose, directly countering geographical isolation in our rural community. All reading materials, illustrated storybooks, and early reader texts are provided free of charge, supported fully through municipal partnerships and regional library network book loans.

Civic Ludothèque & Cognitive Game Lending
The Civic Ludothèque provides Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire families with open access to over six hundred carefully curated board games, cognitive puzzles, and cooperative learning kits designed for every developmental age. Operated by trained volunteer game animators, our lending catalog allows households to borrow quality educational games without financial burden, stimulating analytical thinking, spatial reasoning, and cooperative family play. We host monthly community game evenings and weekend tactical challenges at the village hall, fostering healthy social interaction and respectful sportsmanship. All games are thoroughly inspected, disinfected, and cataloged according to national ludothèque standards, ensuring wholesome, inclusive, and durable recreation for all village citizens.

Field Program 03
Digital Inclusion & Village Media Discovery
Our Digital Inclusion and Village Media Discovery Workshops provide patient, step-by-step guidance for citizens navigating digital public services, electronic library resources, and contemporary computer media. Held every Thursday afternoon, volunteer digital mentors assist seniors, students, and jobseekers with basic computer literacy, internet navigation, online administrative procedures, safe web exploration, and digital catalogue browsing. By providing modern shared computer terminals, accessible printing, and high-speed internet in our communal reading room, we actively dismantle the digital divide in rural Drôme. Every workshop session is free, non-commercial, and open to all residents regardless of prior technological familiarity or socioeconomic background.

Democratizing Reading Culture & Intellectual Exchange in Rural Drôme
The village of Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire, situated in the rolling hills of the northern Drôme department (Drôme des Collines), is home to a vibrant rural community that values heritage, mutual civic assistance, and educational self-determination. In smaller rural municipalities where commercial bookstores and large urban cultural institutions are distant or inaccessible, the local communal library assumes a foundational civic responsibility. It does not merely lend printed books; it serves as a public sanctuary of knowledge, a welcoming living room for the village, and a vital bridge connecting generations of citizens.
The Bibliothèque Communale de Saint Sorlin en Valloire was founded by dedicated local residents who recognized that equitable access to literature, pedagogical games, and modern information channels is essential for the healthy cognitive and social development of every child and adult. Operating strictly as an Association loi 1901, our organization functions with absolute commercial neutrality. We maintain no profit motives, distribute no financial dividends, and operate entirely in the service of public utility. The physical spaces provided within the municipal perimeter at 2 Place de la Mairie allow residents from all walks of life to gather, exchange ideas, discover new authors, and cultivate the lifelong habits of curious inquiry.

The Structure of Our Public Reading Collections
Our library catalogue contains thousands of catalogued items that are continuously rotated, renewed, and maintained to address the diverse informational and recreational needs of the community. In close coordination with the Médiathèque Départementale de la Drôme (MDD), our acquisition committee selects titles across multiple primary departments:
Early Childhood & Youth Literature: Hardboard picture books, sensory reading materials for infants, early readers, graphic novels, comic books (bandes dessinées), young adult fiction, and educational science volumes that support the curricula of the local Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire primary schools.
General Adult Fiction & Poetry: Contemporary French and international literature in translation, historical novels, classic masterworks, regional narratives of the Rhône-Alpes territory, and contemporary mystery fiction selected for reading clubs.
Non-Fiction & Documentary Collections: Practical guides on sustainable agriculture, permaculture, regional geography, Drôme history and heritage, health, philosophy, art history, and sociological essays.
Large-Print & Audio Materials: Specialized high-legibility books and recorded audiobooks specifically provided to ensure that visual fatigue or sight impairments do not hinder our senior neighbors from enjoying classic and modern prose.
The Ludothèque Inventory: A dedicated collection of board games, logic puzzles, fine-motor skill manipulatives, and cooperative family games, inspected and maintained with the same rigor as our printed literature.

Social Cohesion, Rural Inclusivity, and Combating Geographic Isolation
Rural territories face unique sociological challenges. With changing agricultural structures and modern commuting patterns, public spaces where neighbors spontaneously cross paths and converse have steadily diminished. Many elderly villagers live independently in isolated homesteads or hamlets across the surrounding hills. Without proactive community interventions, feelings of loneliness and disengagement can gradually take root.
The Bibliothèque Communale serves as an intentional antidote to this isolation. When an older resident arrives at our weekly public opening sessions, they are greeted by familiar volunteer faces, offered a warm space to sit, and invited to converse about their week, their reading preferences, or local village history. For young families who have recently relocated to Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire seeking a balanced rural lifestyle, our toddler story hours and Saturday morning game ateliers provide an immediate, pressure-free gateway to integrate into the civic fabric of the village, form friendships, and exchange parenting experiences.
Furthermore, our association maintains an informal home-visit service for residents with temporary or chronic mobility limitations. When a villager is unable to climb the steps of the municipal building due to illness or convalescence, volunteer couriers hand-deliver curated parcels of large-print novels, audiobooks, and magazines directly to their doorstep, accompanied by a caring conversation that reaffirms their enduring membership in our civic family.
Educational Partnership with Municipal Schools & Village Groups
A non-profit association can only achieve lasting impact when it is deeply rooted in local partnerships. The Bibliothèque Communale maintains an ongoing, formalized dialogue with the teaching faculty at the École Primaire Publique of Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire. Each class visits the library on dedicated mornings outside of general public hours. During these visits, volunteers guide students through bibliographic classification systems, explain how Dewey decimal codes organize human knowledge, and host interactive book exploration sessions where every child chooses a book to carry back to their classroom.
In addition to the primary school, we collaborate actively with the local municipal council (Mairie de Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire), which graciously provides the municipal premises, utilities, and annual operating subsidies that underpin our daily functionality. We partner with the Centre Intercommunal d'Action Sociale (CIAS) for targeted senior initiatives, and we join hands with neighboring cultural associations in Hauterives, Moras-en-Valloire, and Épinouze to co-host literary readings, traveling author residencies, and regional book festivals.

Democratic Governance & Total Financial Transparency
As an Association déclarée pursuant to the Law of 1 July 1901, our institutional integrity rests upon strict democratic principles. Every active member has an equal voice in our sovereign General Assembly. Our Board of Directors (Conseil d'Administration) and Executive Bureau—consisting of our President, Treasurer, and Secretary—are elected by secret ballot and serve entirely on a benevolent, non-remunerated basis. No member receives any director's fee, honorarium, or private benefit.
Our financial accounting is open to public inspection by our members and municipal funding authorities. We publish a comprehensive annual financial ledger detailing every euro of municipal operating subsidy, departmental grant assistance, and voluntary user subscription received. In accordance with statutory public-benefit principles, every single euro collected is immediately reinvested into our public missions: acquiring fresh book titles, purchasing durable board games, renewing computer hardware, replacing worn protective book covers, and organizing free community cultural exhibitions.

The Voluntary Spirit: The Heartbeat of Our Association
The lifeblood of the Bibliothèque Communale de Saint Sorlin en Valloire is its extraordinary team of benevolent volunteers. These are local men and women—retired educators, active artisans, young parents, university students, and long-standing rural residents—who dedicate their personal time every week without financial expectation. Their tasks encompass the entire spectrum of modern library operations:
Reception & Circulation: Welcoming patrons, registering new village members, updating patron records, logging borrowed titles, and advising readers of all ages on new literary discoveries.
Acquisitions & Cataloguing: Reviewing contemporary publishing catalogues, assessing recommendations made by village readers, assigning bibliographic metadata, stamping, and reinforcing book spines.
Animation & Pedagogy: Designing and conducting Wednesday afternoon reading hours, organizing weekend board game challenges, and coaching seniors on digital literacy terminals.
Physical Maintenance & Hygiene: Regular sanitization of ludothèque toys and board game pieces, mending torn pages, dusting shelves, and rotating thematic window displays.
