Understanding Our Shelf Organization

The Bibliothèque Communale de Saint Sorlin en Valloire organizes its 12,000+ literary volumes and media items using standardized French and international bibliographic systems. Whether you are looking for contemporary fiction, Drôme regional folklore, or a children's science manual, this guide will help you navigate our physical shelves.

1. Fiction & Literature (Romans & Littérature)

Works of fiction are arranged in alphabetical order by the author's surname. Colored spine labels indicate reading categories:

  • White Labels (R): Adult French and world literature, contemporary novels, and classic works.
  • Red Labels (RP): Detective novels, mysteries, and thrillers (Romans Policiers).
  • Blue Labels (SF): Science fiction, fantasy, and speculative literature.
  • Green Labels (T): Regional novels, terroir chronicles, and local rural history.
  • Yellow Labels (LJ): Young adult and adolescent literature (Lectures Jeunesse).

3. Ludothèque Classification: The ESAR Framework

Our collection of over 600 board games and toys is cataloged using the ESAR system:

  • E (Exercise Play): Sensory and fine-motor games for infants and toddlers.
  • S (Symbolic Play): Imaginative role-play, figurines, and storytelling games.
  • A (Assembly Play): Puzzles, mechanical construction sets, and 3D architectural kits.
  • R (Rules Play): Tactical, cooperative, and strategic board games for older children and adults.
